By Sharon R. Lee

It's really tough to choose the colors for your Imperial Guard army. If you're not careful, you might end up with a rainbow-hued force that clashes horribly with the rest of your miniatures collection. But don't worry! We have gone through the process and decided on some color schemes that are going to look great together and be easy to paint at the same time too.

Many people use different color schemes for their Imperial Guard army. This article will go over some of our favorite color schemes, as well as why we like them so much.

The Best Color Schemes

4th Edition - The World At War Imperial Guard Version, The Legion: 1st Edition, Battle Book The best color scheme for a smallish army is probably something in the neo-gothic, military theme. You really don't have a lot of room to include color, but you want the army to look well-constructed and made up of a solid army of individuals.

That said, we don't suggest keeping the army at all black and white either, as this is way too stark a contrast with the rest of your army. So we went with something in the middle, and that's what we recommend for all other armies, whether small, medium, or large.

We used this as a template for our color schemes and it worked out great, though there are a couple of color combinations that would have worked better for us.

The Rainbow

The Rainbow Empire was such a high-quality miniature painted by such a high-quality miniature painter that it has become one of the most popular Imperial Guard color schemes ever. This was made for a different toyline though, so it works great for our army as well.

This army uses no colors other than black and white and focuses on glorious scale in a simple army. Even the name of the army is an allusion to the Rainbow Empire. The colors are the Heroes of Jotunheim, so these guys have fantastic new paint jobs that are easy to get started with.

The infantry of this army is identical to the Rainbow infantry in almost every aspect, apart from color. This is a classic Imperial Guard color scheme, but one that is much more simple and easy to get a look that you're looking for.

All blue

Imperial Guard color scheme: All blue and silver Why we like this: Everything is really blue. There is no division between the different models in the army and its parts. You won't feel like you need to separate each unit to get a clear view of the model.

The green background really contrasts with the blue, creating a much more uniformed look. The model makers definitely put some thought into this color scheme. A lot of people complain about the brown, black, and yellow color schemes because they feel they are too busy and don't look very good together. This means that by simply choosing blue and silver colors for their army, some may have it easier in painting.

All white

This is the most classic and well-established Imperial Guard color scheme. It is relatively easy to paint, and while you have a white and black guy in your army, they are equally good at everything. Wearing the Stormtrooper uniform, Imperial Guard Soldier has a look that is either incredibly aggressive, or completely buttoned up.

The white soldier can get some green coverage here, especially if the squad doesn't have an armored guy with the white. The Stormtrooper on the same side of the white soldier can be colored in any way you want and be a strong opponent.

The Best Imperial Guard Color Scheme

The Stormcaller has a number of really important features. It is huge! It does lots of damage! It can remove a model from the battlefield, removing all models from play! It can also swing into battle and take one to the face, right to the base!

The Stormcaller brings all of this to the table. It's not just the largest Imperial Guard model we have ever seen; the fact that it has very large health totals (Hp10) and high damage on its snout means that you can swing it into battle and be fairly confident that it won't be easily killed.

We feel that this paint scheme is great for all of the important features of the model. This paint scheme is full of chrome and white, the two key elements of the Stormcaller.

5 Other Imperial Guard Color Schemes

1. Space Marines (Brown, Orange, Yellow) Space Marines have a variety of different color schemes, and a lot of them have their own quirks and differences. These five color schemes represent a relatively normal representation of these Space Marines.

Of course, some armies use this color scheme a lot more than others (aka the Horus Heresy armies, Space Wolves and the Villagers, etc), and have their own quirks and nuances to those color schemes too. So these may not be the best for a game that focuses on typical Space Marines.

2. Blood Angels (Blue) For quite a while now, most people have been going with the traditional blue and white color scheme for their Imperial Guard armies.
